Yahweh the Great ” I Am “

We believers understand and know, with absolute certainty, that God is powerful, mighty, compassionate, just, and light. But who is He? What is His name?. This is the burning question ( no pun intended ) which Moses inquired of God, when God gave him the commandment to go to Pharaoh, and demand the release of His children of promise.

Moses said to God, ” Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them”, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you’, and they ask me, ‘ what is his name?’ “Then what should I tell them?

God said to Moses, ” I AM WHO I AM “. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ” I AM has sent me to you”.

God also said to Moses, ” Say to the Israelites, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob – has sent me you’. This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation “. ( Exodus 3:13-15 ).

God is not being deflective when He utters these divine words to Moses. God is revealing the glorious name Yahweh ( some say Jehova or sometimes appearing as “the LORD” ). Yahweh comes from the Hebrew word for ” being “.

Yahweh the great ” I AM ” who depends on no one and is self existing, relies on no other entity, but Himself. He is unchangeable and everything outside of Himself ” IS ” created by Him. God says in the Bible, ” I Yahweh, do not change ” ( Malachi 3:6 ). Yahweh is what theologians call ” aseity ” – meaning self-existent, not derived from anything else, not dependent on anyone else. This why God stands without equal, He is sovereign.

God wants us to worship Him by His holy name, the Hebrew phrase ” Hallelujah yah means ” praise Yahweh “, ” glorify the great I AM “. The name Jesus in Hebrew simply means ” Yahweh saves ” and Jesus ” IS ” the great ” I AM “.

Jesus tells us this awesome truth three times in John chapter 8. In ( John 8:24 ) ” If you do not believe I AM, you will die in your sins. Then in ( John 8:28 ) ” When you have lifted up the Son of Man, you will know that I AM”. Let’s not forget what Jesus says in ( John 8:58 ) ” I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born I AM!”

Jesus is this Yahweh, the great ” I AM “, the one who spoke to Moses from the burning bush. Jesus the great ” I AM ” lead the Israelites on eagles wings out of the hands of the Egyptians. It is Jesus, Yahweh, the great ” IAM ” who leads the church today.

So rest, trust, believe, and be lead by the good shepherd, the great ” I AM “, Jesus Christ.
